Dima Murovanni: “The CLA Jiu-Jitsu Community Is Quite Crazy”

Ask Dima Murovanni how he preps fighters for an ADCC camp and the answer has less to do with volume than with math.

In a recent video, he laid out a system built less on grinding athletes into the ground and more on reading patterns and engineering solutions around them:

My approach is very goal orientated. Whatever I want to achieve, I want to look at it and I have to be two things.
An observer and a mathematician.

I have to be an observer to understand which variables I have – and I have to be a mathematician to use this variables to form the right task to get to the solution.

Murovanni pushed back on the idea that wearing people down produces better competitors:

I don’t see the benefit of it because you’re just tired. And you’re not doing Jiu-Jitsu. You’re pretty much just surviving.
But in ADCC, you want to be the one that dictates how tired you are, not the other person.

He also touched on how his own methods have shifted over the years, naming John Danaher and Gordon Ryan as early influences – before more recently being drawn to Greg Souders and constraints-led coaching:

The biggest change in the recent years that I had was from Brexers, CLA. I always (did) CLA. My my coaching was CLA approach…

So I tried to make up games and then people came to me and they’re like: “Oh, you know Greg Souders, you do Eco.”
And I’m like, what is this? Who’s that?

Even while acknowledging Souders’ influence, Murovanni didn’t shy away from calling out the tension surrounding that corner of the coaching world:

I’m not 100% on how he is and the community is quite crazy, because they’re like – you can call it CLA. And I’m not calling it CLA.
What I do is completely different.
