Craig Jones has never been shy about discussing his use of performance enhancing drugs.
He recently doubled down on that transparency while appearing in Nathaniel Cho’s documentary examining PED testing in combat sports.
Jones believes eliminating PED use from combat sports is unrealistic:
They can’t even keep d**gs out of prisons. The idea that we’re going to be able to have a sports testing scenario within a budget frame for our low-budget sport that would be able to effectively test it.
Jones also made it clear that he considers PED use to be cheating:
I do also wholeheartedly believe I am cheating.
Reflecting on his breakout performance at ADCC 2017, Jones revealed he would have passed a drug test despite having used steroids in the months leading up to the tournament:
If you had PED tested me at ADCC 2017 when I had my breakout moment, I would have actually tested clean. But I definitely blasted for a 6-month period prior to that.
He explained that repeated losses against physically stronger opponents ultimately pushed him toward testosterone:
I was built like a chopstick. I definitely lost matches because I felt like I was not strong enough to compete with that opponent.
Jones also shared the story of his first testosterone injection, which didn’t go according to plan:
I ended up contacting, in Melbourne, for no better term, a d**g dealer for my first shot of testosterone. And he injected me in the wrong location of my butt cheek and I could not sit down for maybe 3 or 4 days.
I swear he hit a nerve in there or something.
