Following the passing of martial arts icon Chuck Norris, Chael Sonnen took a moment to reflect on the legacy of a man who left a lasting impact not just on martial arts, but on the entire combat sports world.
Sonnen delivered a tribute that blended humor, respect, and genuine admiration:
Chuck Norris has passed away. Very sad.
Karate was not going well in heaven, so Chuck Norris went to sort it out. I like that theme.
Known primarily as a karate practitioner, Norris represented a style that has often been questioned in modern mixed martial arts.
Yet, according to Sonnen, figures like Stephen “Wonderboy” Thompson and Lyoto Machida have forced people to rethink those assumptions:
He was very supportive… He represents karate.
MMA likes to tease karate, but then you see guys like Wonderboy or Machida and you start to rethink that.
Sonnen pointed to seminars Norris held decades ago, where he invited legendary figures like Rickson Gracie to teach and openly acknowledged the importance of grappling – something that was far from common at the time:
He explained very openly… I can show you things on your feet, but there’s a whole other realm, and this is what this guy does.
Chuck was very respectful to grapplers and wrestlers.
And it wasn’t just to be kind – he truly understood what works in a real situation.
Sonnen emphasized that this authenticity is what made Norris so widely respected.
He wasn’t just a movie star portraying martial arts – he was a legitimate competitor who had tested himself at the highest level:
Chuck was a guy that went out there and competed. He put it on the line.
He won seven world championships, then went into film and made martial arts cool.He managed to leave a really wonderful reputation behind him.
And that’s a rare thing.
