Cesar Gracie: ‘Ronda Gives Up Her Back Easily. If Alexis Takes Her Back, She’ll Submit Her’

Cesar Gracie: ‘Ronda Gives Up Her Back Easily. If Alexis Takes Her Back, She’ll Submit Her’

UFC women’s bantamweight champion Ronda Rousey will fight BJJ black belt Alexis Davis on Jul. 5 at UFC 175 in Las Vegas, Nev.
Davis has legit submission skills, being a black belt under Cesar Gracie.

Cesar Gracie, who has trained Alexis, and Caio Terra who currently trains her, see holes in Ronda’s game and believe that Alexis has a good chance of catching her on the ground.

In an interview with Tatame, Gracie said:

Alexis was training me, but now is an affiliate gym (Caio Terra’s). Her Jiu-Jitsu it is good, and she gets pretty dangerous positions. If she takes Ronda’s, she will submit her. When she gets the back, she usually catches everybody. Ronda sometimes makes a few mistakes. For example: if she is trying to do a throw and make mistakes, she will end up giving her back. Miesha Tate took her back and Liz Carmouche too, but they were unable to take advantage. If she makes that mistake with Alexis, she is likely to lose the fight. Otherwise, Ronda is much more explosive and is a great Olympic athlete. I think she will win.”

Alexis current Jiu-Jitsu coach, multiple world BJJ champion Caio Terra had this to say to Graciemag about Alexis’s preparation:

You talk about strategy, Ronda has some of the best Judo in the world, how are you guys planning on dealing with her stand up?

CT: You can’t stop someone like Ronda from taking you down, and if your goal is to take her down you’re probably going to have a very bad day. If you could take Ronda down you probably belong in the Olympics! Ronda has trained her entire life in judo (takedowns). With that said that’s the beauty of Jiu-Jitsu, whether you take the person down or they take you down you are right where you want to be!

So you are not that concerned with the takedown, you have to be worried about the arm bar. Of her fights she finished all but her last fight via arm bar, do you have some strategy to prevent her from finishing Alexis the same way?

CT: Hahaha that is for us to know and for everyone to find out. There is no secret, Ronda likes the arm bar, but when it comes to Jiu-Jitsu I feel the best way to beat it is with Jiu-Jitsu. I feel we are prepared but we will have to see.

The bout will mark the fourth title defense of Rousey, who, until today, did not feel the taste of defeat. Will fit Alexis try to do what no one did until today. And get the back of the champion can be a great shortcut to the unprecedented feat.
