Carlos Gracie Jr. has reached one of the highest honors in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, earning his red belt – and further solidifying a legacy that has shaped the sport for decades.
As the son of Carlos Gracie Sr. and part of the legendary Gracie family, Carlos Jr. carried forward a mission that began in the early 20th century.
Over time, he became one of the most influential figures in the global expansion of jiu-jitsu.
He received his black belt from Helio Gracie in 1977 and initially contributed as both a competitor and instructor.
However, his most significant impact came through building infrastructure for the sport.
In 1986, he co-founded the first Gracie Barra academy in Rio de Janeiro – a move that would eventually lead to one of the largest and most recognized teams in the world.
Even earlier, in 1982, he helped organize tournaments through the Associacao de Jiu Jitsu da Barra, laying the groundwork for what would later become the sport’s dominant governing body…
That evolution culminated in the creation of the International Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu Federation (IBJJF) in 1994, which remains the leading tournament organizer in the sport today.
Through these efforts, Carlos Jr. has influenced nearly every level of Jiu-Jitsu, from local academies to elite global competitions.
With over a thousand Gracie Barra schools worldwide and decades of tournament development, his reach is unmatched.
Now, at the 2026 Gracie Barra Summit, he has been awarded the red belt – an honor reserved for those who have spent over 48 years as a black belt.
