Brendan Schaub Talks Infamous Match vs Roberto ‘Cyborg’ Abreu: “That’s On Him”

Brendan Schaub recently reflected on his infamous match against Roberto “Cyborg” Abreu at Metamoris 2, more than a decade after it took place.

The 20-minute bout is widely regarded as one of the least engaging professional Jiu-Jitsu matches in history.
Much of the contest consisted of Abreu sitting in guard and attempting to provoke Schaub into engaging, while Schaub consistently avoided doing so.

Ultimately, Abreu was awarded the decision victory, as he was the only competitor making any discernible attempts to attack.

Schaub offered a perspective that contrasts with the consensus view among fans:

You talking about when I went against the number one grappler in the world?
I stepped in his world as a brown belt, and he couldn’t submit me in any facet.

Schaub addressed the “no engagement” criticism:

It’s his platform. It was his intention to engage me.
That’s what we were hoping for so I choke him out – and I almost did. That’s on him.

Schaub went further, comparing the grappling match at Metamoris 2 to what he believes would happen if the two had met in an MMA bout:

I stepped in his arena.
What do you think would have happened if he stepped in my arena?

It would last 30 seconds.
He would get annihilated.
