Bo Nickal Reveals How Much Money Top College Wrestlers Earn

UFC middleweight prospect Bo Nickal has shed light on the rapidly changing financial landscape of college wrestling…

Revealing that elite athletes are now earning significant income through NIL (Name, Image, and Likeness) agreements.

Nickal addressed claims made by UFC commentator Daniel Cormier, who suggested that top college wrestlers are earning between $100,000 and $400,000 per year.
According to Nickal, those estimates are not accurate:

For sure, these kids are balling out of control.
I graduated in 2019. NIL wasn’t even a thing back then. It didn’t start until around 2021 or 2022…

Now it’s in full swing and these kids are making bank. Those numbers that DC gave for a top-level college team are pretty conservative.

Reflecting on the new opportunities available to younger athletes, Nickal joked that the current system almost makes him wish he were still competing in college:

Oh man, it makes you want to go back to school, right?
I’m like: “Do I have a couple semesters of eligibility left somewhere?”

Nickal also compared the situation to the financial reality wrestlers faced before NIL deals and emerging professional promotions such as Real American Freestyle (RAF).
For decades, even the best wrestlers had extremely limited earning potential:

It’s a huge opportunity. Before something like RAF, wrestling outside of college was basically still amateur.
The only way you made money was winning a world championship or Olympic gold.

Let’s say you win a world championship – you train your entire life and maybe make $50,000.
Win an Olympic gold medal and you might make $250,000, but that’s once every four years.

Nickal emphasized that while those payouts may seem substantial in the moment, they rarely provide long-term financial stability for athletes dedicating their lives to the sport:

When you zoom out, it’s not a lot of money to support yourself on.
