Disturbing new developments have come to light following the recent arrest of former UFC champion BJ Penn.
According to MMAFighting, Penn’s mother, Lorraine Shin, has officially filed for a restraining order against her son – citing escalating behavior tied to a delusional belief that she has been replaced by an imposter.
Penn was initially arrested on charges of “Abuse of family or household member: offensive physical contact”, but the full extent of the situation is now emerging through police reports and Shin’s court filings.
For months, Penn has posted erratic messages online, voicing paranoid claims about his family being replaced — claims he apparently brought into his home life.
In her statement to police, Shin described the following:
Enduring extreme psychological abuse towards me for over the past several months, that I am not Lorraine Shin, I killed his family and have taken over his mother’s identity, and he wants me to be removed from his home.
The situation intensified earlier this May when, after returning from a trip, she found:
All my belongings such as clothes, shoes, jewellery, personal items, and my bed removed from my bedroom.
… My personal purse with my driver’s license, credit card and locks for my safe were stolen.
To protect herself, Shin installed cameras and changed locks — but she alleges Penn sabotaged those efforts, saying:
He placed duct tape on my video cameras to block video camera and placed glue into my deadbolt on my bedroom door to stop me from entering my bedroom.
A few days later, on May 25, she returned home to find the door still sealed shut.
Her other son, Reagan Penn, had to climb through a window to let her in.
Then came a confrontation that escalated into physicality.
Shin claimed that Penn shined a flashlight in her eyes and, when she tried to block it, things turned violent:
I tried turning in several directions and he continued to blind me with his flashlight.
I then tried to grab the flashlight and remove it from my face and then he grabbed my arms and shoved me against the 4-door gray sedan, which I felt a sharp pain in my back.I then started to scream at the top of my voice for my son Reagan Penn to help me.
Though Penn was initially ordered to stay away for 48 hours after his arrest, MMAFighting reports that he returned soon after — leading to a second arrest:
Shin stated:
I believe my son [BJ Penn] is suffering from Capgras delusional syndrome (a psychiatric disorder in which a person holds a delusion that a friend, spouse, parent, other close family member has been replaced by an identical imposter).
He believes I’m an imposter who has killed his family to gain control of the family assets.
