AI Comic Depicting Leandro Lo’s Death Sparks Controversy In BJJ Community

A controversial AI-generated comic shared by BJJ Stars has ignited intense debate across the Brazilian jiu-jitsu community.

The comic, which depicts the tragic shooting of eight-time world champion Leandro Lo, was posted just as the São Paulo Military Court of Justice officially moved to dismiss the police officer accused in the case.

The timing of the post coincides with a major legal decision, as stated by the official court documents:

The seven military judges voted favorably for the loss of rank and position in the special process initiated at the General Command of the Military Police.

Lieutenant Henrique Otávio Oliveira Velozo, the officer involved, was discharged for “serious disciplinary infractions classified as dishonorable and incompatible with police-military function”.

The court further ruled that his behavior was “detrimental to the institution, the State, and fundamental human rights”.

The incident itself occurred on August 7, 2022, during a musical event at Clube Sírio in São Paulo.

According to the investigation, Velozo – off-duty and in civilian clothes – was involved in a confrontation with Lo.
Witness accounts revealed that Lo took him down during the altercation, after which Velozo allegedly left, returned armed, and fired a fatal shot to Lo’s head.

Witnesses reported that Velozo then kicked the unconscious champion twice before fleeing.

The AI comic posted by BJJ Stars depicts Lo as a heroic figure, captioned: “Case Leandro Lo, the truth. Multi-champion and hero.”
One panel reads he was “murdered in front of thousands by a ‘police officer.’”

The post has received hundreds of emotional responses, largely in support of Lo and his legacy.
