Actor Steve Buscemi Is A National Wrestling Hall Of Famer: “The Disciplines Of The Sport”

Before he earned critical acclaim for his roles in Reservoir Dogs, Fargo, and Boardwalk Empire, Steve Buscemi was a varsity wrestler at Valley Stream Central High School in New York.

And, well, his time on the mat was more than a footnote – it was part of the foundation that helped shape his work ethic, discipline, and resilience.

So, in 2015, Buscemi was honored by the Downstate New York Chapter of the National Wrestling Hall of Fame as an Outstanding American.
The award recognizes individuals who participated in wrestling and later used the values learned in the sport to achieve excellence in other fields.

During his high school years, Buscemi competed under the guidance of coach Harold Earl, a Hall of Fame inductee who received the Lifetime Service to Wrestling award in 1995.
Earl led a strong wrestling program at Valley Stream Central, and Buscemi was a varsity starter on a notably competitive team.

The rigorous training and high standards helped instill the kind of discipline Buscemi would carry into every chapter of his career.
As noted by the National Wrestling Hall of Fame, wrestling is proud of those…

… Who have used the disciplines of the sport to launch notable careers in other walks of life, such as science and technology, business and industry, government and the military, and the arts and humanities.

Buscemi exemplifies that ideal.

After graduating in 1975, he served for four years with the New York City Fire Department’s Engine Company 55.
Decades later, he quietly returned to Ground Zero in the aftermath of the September 11 attacks to help his former colleagues during the recovery efforts.
