Ray, an 18-year-old BJJ blue belt from England, has passed away after contracting staph infection.
The infection took place during his time in Thailand, where he went to train.
His BJJ coach, Mark Turville, shared more details on the GoFundMe page:
Unfortunately whilst he was there [in Thailand], he contracted a nasty staph infection, initially he was given antibiotics and sent on his way.
Whilst flying home he became very ill and was rushed to hospital in Malaysia during his lay over flight back to the UK.
Ray suffered from a serious blood infection that has caused severe damage to his heart, liver and lungs.
As a result he’s had to be induced into a coma, as well as underwent medical treatment.
Unfortunately, Ray has passed away a couple of days after.
His father reached out to Craig Jones, who shared Ray’s GoFundMe page earlier – thanking him and providing further information about what happened:
I firstly thank you for trying to raise awareness of this.
I also wanted to tell you that you were an inspiration to Ray, he would often watch videos of you to learn more of the art form.Lastly, I was hoping that you would also share our fund me page on your platform.
We are trying to raise money to help with the costs of bringing him home and raising awareness of this staphylococcus in the sport, so that we can avoid further deaths.
If you wish to contribute, you may do so on the GoFundMe page here.
