Xande Ribeiro: “Online Belt Promotions Weaken Jiu-Jitsu”

Online learning and belt testing in Jiu-Jitsu has drawn the attention of many famous BJJ practitioners . There are people who agree with the practice, but many are overwhelmingly against it.

In the opinion of Xande Ribeiro, five times world champion of Jiu-Jitsu the, the practice creates hordes of fake black belts, which ultimately affects Jiu-Jitsu as a whole. Xande and his brother have their own successful online academy called BJJ Library, however unlike some other online academies, they do not offer online belt testing.

In an interview with tatame, Xande Ribeiro , said that he feels ashamed and saddened by the online belt testing:

“Martial Arts and Jiu-Jitsu are taught at the gym, sweating in the gi on the mat, training, hurting and feeling frustrated … I think the worst are not those who are promoted, it is those who are giving the promotion. If you want to be promoted via the internet, it’s your problem. I do not see any harm if you watch videos of Jiu-Jitsu on the internet, but there’s nothing better than the camaraderie of the academy and the day to day practice. This is sad. People take years and years striving to develop their Jiu-Jitsu and get promoted, and the other person goes there on the internet, press three buttons and gets a belt… “he said.

“I think that the federation (IBJJF) had to start to regulate this sort of thing. I think there’s much wrong in Jiu-Jitsu nowadays. Attitudes of fighters, trainers, and this is one more thing that  just saddens me. This denigrates my sport and leaves us weaker, because the more bad black belts appear, the worst it will be for the sport. I focus on teaching what is right to my students, who are dedicated, who sweat, bleed, cry and who are proud of the belt that they have on their waist. I’m proud to put this belt on their waist. Now, if you have a bunch of pseudo-black belts who invent these things and feel proud to pass this knowledge without even knowing their students, they I think that they don’t respect Jiu-Jitsu itself, because when it’s time to roll , the quality will speak up, “he concluded.
