Wrestling Transcends Politics: Iran gifts Burroghs

The true sportmanship of grappling is apparent once more.

In this latest example, Jordan Burroghs of USA wrestling team (and winner of 2012 Olympic Gold) received a surprise gift after having to withdraw from last weekend’s Freestyle World Cup in order to be present for the birth of his new daughter Ora.

Iranian Wrestling Federation send Jordan a Termeh, a hand woven cloth originating in Iran, from them as a way to honor the birth of his daughter.

Iran was facing US at the Freestyle Wrestling world cup. They faced each other in a dual during the qualifiers with the meet resulting in a drawn. Ultimately Burroghs’ absence meant a victory brought by Hassan Yazdani who defeated Alex Dieringer in the dual’s 74kg match. This meant Iran got to move into the finals.

Iran defeated Russia in finals and earned 5th straight Freestlye World Cup title. USA ended up 4th because they lost 3rd place dual to Georgia.
