World’s Unluckiest Pickpocket Runs Straight Into Two Jiu-Jitsu Black Belts in Barcelona

Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu Black Belts Stop Pickpocket in Barcelona Using MMA Skills

When you’re a professional MMA fighter and a BJJ black belt, you don’t just walk past trouble—you shut it down. That’s exactly what happened when Brazilian MMA pro Gabriel Souza Galindo and his brother Guga, both black belts, turned a family vacation in Barcelona into a real-life action scene.

From Beach Day to Busting a Thief

Gabriel was on a Eurotrip with his family, heading to the beach, when a shout cut through the air in the narrow streets of Barcelona:

“Attention! Pickpocket!”

A man came sprinting toward them—straight into the wrong alley, because standing there were two black belts. The thief collided with Gabriel, who dropped him with a clean takedown. His brother was already on the scene.

BJJ in Action

In seconds, Gabriel had the suspect in a body lock. They quickly confirmed he had just stolen a Portuguese tourist’s necklace. Time to give him a quick introduction to Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu.

The thief tried to bite Gabriel—big mistake. Calmly, Gabriel warned him that if he tried again, he’d be leaving without an arm. The message landed. Gabriel transitioned to back control, holding him steady as a furious crowd gathered.

Crowd Control & a Lesson in Respect

“My brother leaned in and told him, ‘Yeah, my friend… you’re screwed,’” Gabriel later recalled.
Some bystanders, angry at the attempted theft, gave the pickpocket a few “street massages,” but Gabriel didn’t let it go too far.

When the man kept resisting, Gabriel applied a rear naked choke—just enough to let him know who was in control. He whispered, “Stay still — if I wanted to, I could finish you.”

Police Arrive, Story Goes Viral

After about ten minutes, the police arrived. The tourist got his necklace back, the crowd got a free jiu-jitsu demo, and the pickpocket got a painful lesson in messing with the wrong people.

“We stopped the robbery, taught the thief a lesson, and kept everyone safe,” Gabriel said. “And we went back to enjoying our day in Barcelona—with a great story to tell.”

BJJ isn’t just for the mats—it’s a real-world skill that can protect yourself and others. Gabriel Souza and his brother proved that day that martial arts are as much about control and restraint as they are about power.
