Why Train Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu? Jocko Willink Answers

Why should you train Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu? There are a million answers to this question and all of them are correct.
Training BJJ will get you into a better physical and mental shape, make you more stress-resilient, it’ll have you meeting interesting people from all walks of life, and improve the quality of your life overall. It’s an amazing sport and tool for self-improvement at the same time.

However, one of the most important reasons why you should train Jiu-Jitsu has to do with self-defense. Jocko Willink emphasizes why this is the case:

If you square up to punch me, I can run away from you. If you square off to kick me, I can run away from you. And if you push me, I can run away from you.
So, great… I don’t need to know how to box in order to run away from you.

Where all this changes is when you grab me. And now I don’t have the option to run away anymore. Now I actually have to know how to get away from your grip. And that’s where Jiu-Jitsu comes into play.
So, especially if you get me on the ground – if you grab me and get me on the ground… Now I need to know how to get you off of me, how to get up and get away.

So, now you have your “why”. And there are no more reasons that should be stopping you from stepping foot on the mats as soon as possible.
