Whatever You Do, Don’t Ever Ask Your Instructor About Getting Promoted

In Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, belt promotions are reasons for joy and pride for those who are promoted to the next belt, but they can also be a reason for sadness and frustration for those who are not promoted …

Today we will tell you about one of the most important things to do if you are thinking of getting promoted this year, check out this article until the end and get ready for a surprise!

Since we took our first steps on the mats, we already dreamed of the day when we would become a black belt. Everyone knows that to reach this level it takes a lot of effort, dedication and persistence, after all tying the black belt around the waist is not a task for “regular” people …

Many are mistaken and frustrated because the road to the black belt can take longer than expected and also, much more important than just a promotion, what will truly make you a black belt is the journey you take in Jiu Jitsu over the many years of practicing this sport.

Eventually everyone that keeps training hard will be promoted to the next belt and be closer to the black belt, but not everyone is always ready…

Nobody knows better about one’s evolution and aptitude to be promoted or not than the instructor who assesses a student’s technical evolution every day, attendance, relationship with teammates and everything used as a criteria for promotion of students.

The desire to be promoted is something that must be controlled and never externalized to your teammates and your instructor who, if they see this attitude, will think that you are not mature enough to receive such a promotion.

Your instructor observes your attitude within the academy. For him it doesn’t matter only if you are a champion, but if you have a good attitude, such as helping new students and respecting them. Your technical quality and ability to pass it on to his teammates are also important attributes that are also observed every day …

Imagine that you did everything right the whole year and are ready to be promoted, but now, with little time left to receive the belt, you hesitate to go to your teacher and ask if you will be promoted …. He can interpret that as disrespectful…

The best thing to do is to wait and see what awaits you … If you have been promoted, keep working hard to continue to be recognized for your merits and if you didn’t, how about working harder next year !?

Within our sport, technical knowledge and a willingness to learn are certainly the keys to success and a faster promotion in Jiu Jitsu.

Learn technical knowledge, train Jiu Jitsu and persist, you can’t go wrong, if it doesn’t work the first time, believe in your effort and keep insisting that the belt will only be a matter of time and your time will come!
