Vinny Magalhaes was recently on the excellent Verbal Tap Podcast where he talked to Raf and Kevin about everything. The topics covered include: WSOF 24, the Twister money Eddie owes him, ADCC 2015, Garry Tonon, Metamoris, Submission Grappling, MMA, Team Zenith, Copa Podio, and everything else the guys though to ask him about.
The subject of his performance came in and Vinny was happy to give his opinion on 2015 ADCC +99 kg champion Orlando Sanchez.
Sanchez said after winning said;
“For me it’s just another day in my office, showing that I am the best grappler in the world.”
Vinny who lost to Sanchez by referee decision in the semi finals, was not impressed by the American. Vinny is known for speaking his mind, had this to say about the American grapplers performance:
“I’ve watched Orlando compete a few times and he’s not the most exciting grappler in the world.
My personal opinion: He is also not the best grappler in the world. He won ADCC and won the gold but he’s not the best grappler in the world. He knows how to use his body type to win. Grappling is about much more than using your weight and body type to win a match.
He didn’t score one takedown, didn’t score a guard pass, didn’t score a sweep in the tournament. He won 3 matches in a row, including the final, without scoring one single point.
In our fight, I was on the bottom the whole time, but I was trying to make things happen. I was just stuck under his 300 pounds. It was frustrating.
For Vinny the three best grapplers that should have been on the podium in that division were Joao Gabriel, Dean Lister and himself.
“These are the guys that are technical, that go for sweeps and submissions, guys that make it entertaining”
