Touching Father’s Day Ad: Martial Arts Against Bullying

Father’s day was this past Sunday and with it came an ad from American Family Insurance who took the opportunity to roll out a moving tale of a father who takes a peculiar approach to fostering his son’s dreams. It celebrates a way our fathers have our backs and support us even in times when we may not see through their intentions at first.

The short video focuses on a boy aspiring to be a dancer as he sits in his quarters and gazes at a flamenco dancer on his phone than his father comes in with a package. Much to the boy’s disappointment – it’s a judo uniform.

While this choice raises some eyebrows temporarily it’s been scientifically proven that martial arts promote physical fitness, help relax the body and develop strong mind-body connection therefor developing mental calmness as well as self esteem and a deeper understanding of self.

Dad then encourages son to begin taking classes walking him to each session as the local bullies hurl insults at the boy. The son persists and becomes more confident and wins a trophy a  series of promotions as a result.

Father then gifts him with a dancers’s outfit. The boy is elated and can now wear the costume as he walks alone down the street ignoring those who were goading him all along. The father was setting him up for his dreams the whole time, and by the end there’s no reason to fear the bullies just to pursue your dreams.
