The Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu community has been shaken by reports that prominent coach Melqui Galvão has been taken into custody in Brazil after presenting himself to authorities. According to information circulating online and documents attributed to the São Paulo Court of Justice, a temporary arrest of thirty days has been ordered as part of an ongoing criminal investigation.
The case is still developing and it is important to emphasize that this is an investigation, not a conviction. Brazilian law guarantees the presumption of innocence and the right to full legal defense, and the process is expected to continue as authorities gather further evidence and testimony.
Images of what appear to be official court documents have been widely shared. The documents identify the individual as Melquisedeque de Lima Galvão Ferreira and indicate that the detention is linked to a case being handled by a court dealing with crimes against children and adolescents in the state of São Paulo. The arrest is classified as a temporary measure lasting thirty days, typically used during the investigative phase of serious cases.
The documents reference several articles of the Brazilian Penal Code. In translated form, these include Article 147, which concerns threats and intimidation. Article 154-A relates to the unauthorized invasion of electronic devices such as phones or computers. Article 215-A addresses sexual harassment, defined as the practice of a sexual act without consent. Article 217-A refers to rape of a vulnerable person, defined as sexual acts involving a minor under fourteen or someone unable to give consent. An additional paragraph under Article 217-A clarifies situations where a victim is unable to resist due to illness, disability, or other limiting conditions. These are serious allegations and fall under some of the most severe categories of criminal law in Brazil.
Reports suggest that Galvão turned himself in and is currently being held while the investigation proceeds. Authorities have not yet issued a final judgment and the case remains open.
Melqui Galvão is widely known in the sport as one of the most successful developers of young talent. He has built a reputation for producing elite competitors on the international stage and has been a central figure in the rise of a new generation of athletes.
Among the most prominent of these athletes is his son, Mica Galvão, who is considered one of the top competitors in modern Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu. Mica Galvão has won major titles including world championships and has established himself as a dominant force across multiple organizations with an aggressive and submission-oriented style.

His career, however, has also included controversy. Earlier in his rise, Mica Galvão tested positive for a banned substance under anti-doping regulations. The case generated significant discussion within the community, particularly due to his young age at the time. Questions were raised about the possibility of supplement contamination versus intentional use. He served a suspension and later returned to high-level competition, continuing his ascent in the sport.
The current situation involving Melqui Galvão is already having a strong impact on the Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu community. Allegations of this nature raise serious concerns about athlete safety, particularly in environments involving young practitioners. At the same time, the legal process must be allowed to proceed without premature conclusions.
As of now, there has been no conviction and the investigation is ongoing. More information is expected to emerge in the coming days as authorities continue their work. The global BJJ community will be watching closely as this case develops.
