This Simple 1 Minute Drill Will Significantly Improve Your Competition Success

Don’t tell us, we know what it’s about… There’s been this competition. And you were doing really well in the first match – surprisingly well, actually. You were hitting moves properly and there have been some great exchanges with your opponent. It’s a highlight reel match and the other person is really skilled; so skilled, in fact, that at around 60 seconds before the end of the match, they’ve gained a 2-point advantage against you.
And no matter how much you wanted to win, no matter how much you wanted to overcome that disadvantage, you were unable to do so. You’ve lost in the last minute of the match.

Well, what if we were to tell you that there is a simple 1 minute drill that you can do every so often in training… That will significantly improve your competition success?
Professor Henry Akins explains what this drill is about.

THE ONE MINUTE DRILL FOR YOUR COMPETITION SUCCESS

The drill, in and of itself, is rather simple. You’ll set the timer at 60 seconds – and you’ll put yourself in a bad position. This can be in the training partner’s Mount, Closed Guard, with them on your back… And your goal will be to escape this position before the clock runs out.
Alternatively, you can also put yourself in a relatively advantageous position, but with the mindset of having to make up for a certain amount of points – for instance, you could tell yourself: “Okay, I need to get 4 more points until this minute runs out in order to win the match.”

The point of this drill is to teach you to give it your all in a limited timeframe. To force you to think about your options and how to execute them when the time is pressuring you to do so.
You may also make this drill harder by shortening the time period; for example, by setting the timer at 30 seconds. Professor Akins explains more behind it on the video below:
