Thinking About Quitting BJJ? Consider The 3-Month Rule

Are you thinking of quitting Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu? You’ve only just begun training and it seems that you aren’t really gifted for all of this “Arte Suave” stuff… Maybe you’d be better off with another martial art?
Maybe. But give yourself the benefit of doubt. And implement the 3-month rule.

 

THE 3-MONTH RULE OF BJJ

If you’re relatively new to BJJ or even if you’ve been training for quite a while… If the thoughts of quitting popped up in your head, it might be a good idea to give yourself 3 months of space for thinking about it.
And not just thinking, actually. But of dedicating yourself fully to training and giving your absolute best.

Because, if you truly apply yourself to Jiu-Jitsu with all of your might for the duration of just three months – you’d be able to see if you’re really that untalented for it. Or if you have untapped potential that simply needed some patience and work.
Nick “Chewy” Albin explained it all in a recent Instagram video:

What I would encourage you to do is… You have three months. And you have to stay out of this defeatist mindset; because if you say that you suck at something – you [really will] suck at something.
Instead, go into it [the three months] with the mindset of knowing that you’ll suck at it, just like everyone else did.

But [think to yourself]: “Maybe, just maybe… If I go into it with head on my shoulders and with hard effort, if I really push myself to do well… Maybe something positive will come out of it after these three months are up.”

For, the mindset of not knowing what will happen being ready to give your best nevertheless – that’s the mindset that will make you better.
