In BJJ and grappling, timing is everything. Very often, BJJ practitioners are eager to rush to a submission option that isn’t there yet and either end up getting submitted or getting stuck in a bad postion.

Many times, patience is really what is required to pull something off a technique.

5x BJJ world champion Bernardo Faria has this to say about patience in Jiu-Jitsu:

“I always say that if you have 100% of the things you need to do a move but the timing is not right because you were not patient you may not get it but if you have 70% of the things that you need to do a move and you have the perfect timing than you will get the move.”

This gives you a very good idea of just how important being patient is when it comes to BJJ. This becomes even more obvious when you get older, or if you are going against someone who is very explosive with a lot of energy. By being patient, you not only exhaust your opponent but find openings to attack at just the right time.

In this video, BJJ black belt Robin Geisler discusses the importance of patience and it’s role in effectiveness in jiu-jitsu.
