SUG 28: Full Results & Highlights

Yet another exciting Submission Underground (SUG) event took place last weekend. On October 31, the SUG 28 displayed a number of fast-paced matches, with one novelty: a Gi match!

 

SUG 28 MAIN EVENT: ANDY VARELA VS. HAISAM RIDA

Andy Varela and Haisam Rida went against each other in the SUG 28 main event. Even though Varela was in a significant weight (and height) disadvantage, he was able to go the distance – mostly on his feet.
Then, in overtime, Varela took advantage of the very first opportunity that presented itself. He set up a Rear Naked Choke after just 27 seconds! Then, Rida almost beat his time with an Armbar. However, the timing was too late, and Varela emerged victorious.

 

SUG 28 CO-MAIN EVENT: AARON TIEGS VS. GUILHERME VASCONCELOS

The SUG 28 co-main event brought a novelty to the shore. It marked the first time that a Gi match was displayed at Submission Underground – and one of the rare times when EBI overtime rules were utilized in a Gi match.
Tiegs controlled much of the bout and then, in overtime, he escaped Vasconcelos’ back control… And then secured a Lapel Choke, getting the win!
