Simple Concept That Transformed My Game: You Can Be Slow & Still Be Explosive for Grappling

Discover the Secret to Timed Explosiveness for Grappling Success

Ever felt like you’re giving it your all on the mats but still hitting a wall when it matters most? Here’s the truth: being explosive in Jiu-Jitsu isn’t about raw athleticism—it’s about timing. With just a few key tweaks, even if you are slow, you can transform your game and make a massive impact when it counts most.

Let me tell you a story…

A few years back, I was rolling with a teammate during class when my instructor Hugo Fevrier stopped me mid-roll. “You’re sparring at the same intensity the whole time,” he pointed out. “It makes you predictable.” At first, I was confused. What was I doing wrong?

He continued: “Think of effort on a scale from 1% to 100%. You’re operating at a constant 80%, which drains your energy and makes it easy for your opponent to read you. Instead, stay at 50% and explode to 100% when it’s time to pass guard, take the back, land a submission, sweep, or go for a throw. After the burst, drop back to 50%.”

That insight changed everything for me.

Learning from Nature’s Best Predators

Think about how a lion stalks its prey or how a crocodile patiently waits for the perfect moment to strike. They conserve energy, move slowly, and then explode with incredible force when the time is right. Once the burst is over, they return to a steady pace, conserving their energy again. It’s a strategy that works—and it can work for you on the mats.

I put this idea to the test. In training and competition, I saw a 30% improvement in my performance. By sparring at a relaxed 50%, I could recover and conserve energy. Then, when the time was right, I’d burst to 100%, making decisive moves to secure my position or go for submissions. My game became unpredictable and much more efficient.
