Romulo Barral On How To Manipulate & Overwhelm a Defensive Opponent

Rolling against a very defensive opponent can be very frustrating. You are trying to move them but they are trying to survive and blocking all your attacks.

A great option for this type of opponent in the Gi is to use a spider guard.

The Spider Guard is a very effective type of guard in BJJ and has been heavily used since the late 1980’s.

The spider guard is specific to the gi (kimono) but can also be used in a modified way in No Gi. It requires a strong grip, use of legs leg strength as well as good flexibility. The spider guard gives you immense control as your using the strength of your legs to stretch out and control the opponent.

There are countless aspects of the Spider Guard: the Double Biceps position, progressing to the Leg Lasso, and then the ‘newer’ aspects of the Spider Guards: Spider X, Collar Spider, Reverse de la Riva, etc.

In this video, BJJ legend Romulo Barral shares the secret of how to control someone in the Gi.
