Roberto Cyborg Abreu: Strength Matters!

Cyborg is a celebrated competitor from the Carlson Gracie lineage whose arguably biggest feat was securing the ADCC 2013 Absolute Championship. In addition to this Cyborg won World Nopgi Championships, Brazilian Nationals, Panamericans and other. He’s usually in the Heavy/Super heavy division.

One interesting tidbit from his biography is that due to a car accident he was in in 2000 he shattered his left arm to the point where the doctors told him he wouldn’t move it again. To this day he still has broken glass in it today. Just 4 months after he came in 2nd at the Brazilian Nationals.

Having gone through numerous challenges he found himself wanting to clarify something, that Strength matters. Here’s what he wrote:

“People always say Technique over strengh. I do believe technique will overcome strength always, but when you have a good technique supported By a conditioned body it becomes a whole new animal. Strength is your gas pedal, technique is your steering wheel. I believe it’s very important a good technique supported by a strong body. It’s like having a potent car. It’s better to have power and not need it, than needing it and not having it. Here an Example of technique supported by power! Tornado sweep At ADCC agaist The Monster Orlando Sanches!”

As pessoas sempre dizem Técnica sobre a força. Eu acredito que técnica irá superar a força sempre, mas quando você tem uma boa técnica apoiada por um corpo condicionado torna-se um animal totalmente diferente. A força é o pedal do acelerador, a técnica é o volante. Eu acredito que é muito importante uma boa técnica apoiada por um corpo forte. É como ter um carro potente. É melhor ter o poder e não precisar dele, do que precisar dele e não tê-lo. Aqui um exemplo de técnica com suporte de força! Cyborg also has a unique learning process. Cyborg considers himself self-thought. Best way to learn, according to Cyborg is teaching! Teaching forces a different perspective and forces anticipation. Many kids today just swallow what the teacher is saying but don’t grasp the mechanic.
