Rickson Gracie Opens Up About His Brother Relson’s Lifelong Struggles with Substance Abuse

In his recent memoir, Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu icon Rickson Gracie opens up about the complicated relationship with his older brother, Relson Gracie, whose immense potential as a fighter was overshadowed by struggles with addiction. Through candid stories, Rickson offers a glimpse into the challenges that shaped their lives and the enduring impact of Relson’s choices on the Gracie family.

A Natural Talent with a Wild Streak

Rickson describes Relson as a gifted martial artist, whose natural talent and fierce competitiveness could have made him one of the greatest fighters in the Gracie family. However, Relson’s lack of discipline and penchant for a rebellious lifestyle held him back.

“Relson might have been the best fighter in the family if he wasn’t such a wild man,” Rickson writes. Despite nights of partying and arriving at tournaments sleep-deprived, Relson often triumphed, relying on sheer grit and raw skill. Yet, this recklessness came at a personal and professional cost.

The Dark Turn

While many members of the Gracie family dabbled in recreational substances during the 1970s, Relson’s drug use spiraled out of control. What began as experimentation escalated into a dangerous dependency. His cocaine habit led to destructive behavior, including a near-fatal overdose in the family home. Rickson recounts how their brother Rolls saved Relson’s life after finding him unconscious in the bathroom.

As Relson’s addiction deepened, Rickson found himself taking on an unusual role within the family—his father Hélio Gracie’s “unofficial spy.” Rickson would search Relson’s belongings for drugs, handing over any contraband to their father in an effort to curb Relson’s behavior. Despite these efforts, Hélio maintained a philosophy of allowing his children to make their own choices, believing they each had the potential to find their way back.

“Relson is lost, but he has the heart to find the right path again,” Hélio told Rickson, expressing his unwavering faith in his son’s ability to change.

A Life Marked by Struggle

Relson’s troubles persisted over the years. In 2020, he was arrested in Brazil while transporting marijuana derivatives on a highway between Rio de Janeiro and São Paulo. Authorities discovered skunk, a potent form of marijuana, along with cannabis oils and creams, in his luggage. Though initially indicted for drug trafficking, Relson was later released after presenting evidence that the substances were intended for medicinal purposes.

Relson’s lawyer, João Francisco Neto, issued a statement clarifying the situation:
“The athlete and professor Relson Gracie was a victim of a big misunderstanding. He brought cannabidiol-based medication for therapeutic purposes, all obtained with a prescription in the U.S. His arrest was promptly revoked by the Judiciary.”

Despite the legal resolution, the incident underscored the ongoing complexities of Relson’s life.

A Contrast of Paths

Rickson reflects on the stark differences between himself and his brother, acknowledging that while he admired Relson’s fighting spirit, he was determined to take a different path. Rickson credits his own discipline and focus for shaping his legacy as one of the greatest martial artists of all time.

In his memoir, Rickson highlights how he absorbed lessons from his siblings: Rorion’s passion, Rolls’ athleticism, and Relson’s ferocity. Yet, he remained determined to avoid the pitfalls of self-destructive behavior, emphasizing resilience, discipline, and self-awareness as key to his success.

A Complicated Legacy

The Gracie family is synonymous with excellence in martial arts, but Rickson’s narrative sheds light on the personal struggles that often go unseen. Relson’s story is a reminder that even among legends, the challenges of addiction and rebellion can leave a lasting mark.

While Relson’s life has been fraught with chaos, his contributions to Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, particularly in popularizing the art in Hawaii, remain significant. Rickson’s reflections highlight not only the challenges within their family but also the enduring hope for redemption and growth. In the end, the Gracie legacy is one of triumph and struggle, woven together by the complexities of human experience.
