BJJ world Champ develops Million Dollar Business

Camil Moldoveanu was an accomplished BJJ competitor having placed at both World championship and Europeans. However, after winning the European title, he suffered a difficult knee injury that wasn’t fully treated.

Moldoveanu’s right knee injury occurred in January 2015. Recovery lasted about 3 months but he dropped out of the program about 4 weeks in- because he felt his knee recovered. Rushing recovery is something many of us are guilty of. But it wasn’t an accurate estimate, being rid of pain didn’t mean Moldoveanu’s knee actually recovered.

This sparked an interesting idea, he wanted to construct a device with sensors (initially it was a set of two “braclets”) to help therapists and patients follow progress of injury and the effect the treatment is having on the patient. This patent “Reflex” sparked a lot of interest from investors and it’s now valued at 1 million US dollars.

“70% of patients don’t complete recovery, half of them get reinjured in the next 2 to 3 years and ultimately end up on an operating table. We have seen an entire study made by an insurance company in the US about it. I only half recovered and had to have surgery” – says Moldoveanu and cofounder along with his chief technical officer Andrew Kluger.

This isn’t the first startup of former athlete, Camil Moldoveanu. Being a graduate of mathematics and computer science, he’s been working since 2007. His initial project, Jaboo, wasn’t a success story.

Reflex has reached its’ 4th prototype and is close to being finished. The team is currently working on a mobile app and will subsequently begin collecting feedback from partner clinics who enter the pilot program.

Thus far, 5 sets were produced for testing and he’s had discussions with over 20 clincs in Romania, Britain, Turkey and Austria about receiving feedback. He aims to start a pilot program in the near future in at least 6 clinics around Europe and initiate presale in around 50 others.

This exciting new product could reinvent the way we recover and track our health and progress.
