Renato Moicano Criticizes Kron Gracie’s ‘Old Jiu-Jitsu’ After UFC 310 Defeat: “It’s Lost Its Effectiveness”

Renato Moicano didn’t hold back his criticism of Kron Gracie’s performance at UFC 310, describing his reliance on “old Jiu-Jitsu” tactics as ineffective in modern MMA. Kron, the son of Jiu-Jitsu legend Rickson Gracie, faced Bryce Mitchell in his return to the octagon after an 18-month hiatus. The bout ended in a third-round knockout, marking Kron’s third loss in four UFC appearances and drawing sharp criticism from fans and fighters alike.

Moicano analyzed the fight on his YouTube channel, addressing Kron’s struggles and the challenges of adapting traditional Jiu-Jitsu to the demands of MMA.

“The worst part isn’t losing—everyone loses. The worst part is pulling guard and not being effective,” Moicano explained. “Jiu-Jitsu like this, this old Jiu-Jitsu style of pulling guard, has lost a lot of its effectiveness.”

Kron’s reliance on pulling guard—a strategy often criticized in MMA—proved costly. Moicano emphasized how Bryce Mitchell capitalized on the position:

“It’s very difficult to pull guard and sweep someone in MMA. In competitive Jiu-Jitsu, without punches, you can take risks by opening your guard to attack a foot. But in MMA, where punches are involved, it’s a different game. Mitchell used the opportunity to land brutal elbow strikes when Kron jumped into guard. As a fan, it was ugly to watch that fight.”

Kron’s previous setback against Charles Jourdain in early 2023 already raised concerns about his striking abilities and outdated grappling tactics. Critics pointed out his overreliance on pulling guard—a tactic better suited for pure grappling competitions—leaving him vulnerable in an MMA setting.

Now with a UFC record of 1-3, Kron Gracie’s future in the promotion remains uncertain. UFC 310 was another reminder of how traditional Jiu-Jitsu must evolve to stay relevant in mixed martial arts. While his father Rickson and uncle Rorion helped establish Jiu-Jitsu’s dominance in the early days of the UFC, Kron’s struggles highlight the challenges of modern MMA, where well-rounded skills are essential.

As of now, there has been no word on whether Kron will continue competing in the UFC. Fans and analysts alike are left questioning whether he will adapt his game or step away from the sport.
