Do you want to improve to the best of your ability in Jiu-Jitsu?
Then you will have to forego the notion of “winning” in training – because the only true win is expanding your knowledge & skillset.
Rafael Lovato Jr. has emphasized that in one of his recent social media post.
Here is what the BJJ legend had to say on the topic:
Understand this, and this is so huge. And as simple as it sounds…
Your ego is always gonna be your own worst enemy. There is no winning or losing in training!
I tell you what – it’s a little bit of a pet peeve of mine if I ask one of my students: “Hey, how was training today?”
And they say: “Oh, great, I won every round.”I’m, like – what are you talking about? What does winning mean?
Are you counting points? Are you counting advantages? Are you thinking that you would have got the decision if it came down to a decision?
Lovato Jr. explains that the “losing” might be just the thing you needed.
And that you need to focus on positional sparring in order to improve:
There is no loss, there is no win…
You know, the “losing” in a round could be the best thing ever possible for you on that night, the best thing that you needed..
We are going to need to have to limit ourselves, and put ourselves in different situations, and do specific training that isn’t the most fun – that could be the what we are worst at.
We are gonna have to do those things to make sure that we are constantly improving – and not just a little bit, but by a lot.
