Powerful Words for the Loser In a BJJ Competition

Nobody likes to be submitted in training or in competition, but there is a famous saying “There is no losing in Jiu-Jitsu, you either win or you learn”.

John Brashear, gives some good advice on how to positively react the fact of losing in Jiu-Jitsu:

I know that it wasn’t the result you wanted. You worked harder than that. You cared more than that. You knew that you wanted it more than anyone else.

But here you are. Out in the first round. Not a single victory to speak of. Not only could you not show off your best, you couldn’t show off anything.

Not a single thing. You just wound up being fodder for the other guys highlight reel. You wanted to have a highlight reel, but you won’t get one.

You only have a loss, and a mindful of regrets on the way home. Things you could have done differently. Training sessions you should have had. But you can’t have those, and you can’t do anything about the past.

The only thing that’s real now is what comes next. The things you’re going to do, and the training sessions your going to have. All you can do is focus on those. Save your despair for the day you can no longer set foot on the mats.

Here are some motivating quotes from the Miyao brothers:

– Nothing is impossible. Life is hard for the lazy.

– The law is to train , train, train – until the lamb becomes a lion .

– Never let anyone tell you cannot do something . If you have a dream, go after it. There are people who cannot win and say that you also will not win. If you want something, go after it.

– The only thing that stands between a man and what he wants in life is merely the will to try and the faith to believe that it is possible.

– So you lost ? Shut up and train more.
