Perks of Having a BJJ Boyfriend

Perks of Having a BJJ Boyfriend

If you’ve ever wondered what it’s like to date a guy who trains Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, then the short answer is, it just may change your life. Seriously. Outsiders who don’t understand the “gentle art,” may look at male BJJ practitioners as rough and smelly, with disfigured ears. But in many ways, they are gentlemen who will come to your aid and sweep you off your feet. Literally!

Protection:

If it wasn’t yet very obvious, having a BJJ boyfriend, means you’re pretty much protected at all times. Once you’ve consistently started to train Jiu-Jitsu, your body tends to stay alert, and “on guard,” most of the time, even if you are just walking across the street to buy groceries.  It’s definitely not a feeling you can just shake off. So if anything ever does go down, your boyfriend is more prepared than most people to handle the situation, but that is, of course, if what transpires involves hand-to-hand combat.

Ego-Free:

A true Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu student is humble and, oddly, not aggressive. If you don’t understand the sport, you can definitely get the wrong impression. You may ask yourself,  “These people pay to fight for fun?” To answer that question, yes we do, and it’s awesome! But seriously, Jiu-Jitsu is more than just throwing each other around on the mats. Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu is a full body sport that demands precise, technical maneuvers and full concentration. It also demands a lot of patience. There is no way “jiujiteiros” with higher belt ranks achieve their status without having encountered lots of failures, injuries, and general difficulties. In most cases, when you train BJJ for a significant amount of time, any sort of ego disappears. A big ego, and a BJJ student just don’t go hand in hand. If you’re too ego-driven, you will eventually just fail in the martial art. But those who stick to BJJ develop these great qualities — patience, humility, inner and outer strength. If a BJJ practitioner is willing to put it in that much effort into their sport, then they will likely do the same for a relationship.

Dedication and Consistency:

Everyone is certainly unique, but if there’s one thing that BJJ practitioners collectively share, it’s dedication to their sport. It takes about ten years for one to receive their black belt, but even a blue, purple, or brown belt is a worthy achievement, and speaks to years of hard work. In general, being dedicated in relationships comes naturally to BJJ practitioners, since they have sacrifice, and dedicated so much time and effort to reach their personal goals. Showing up consistently at practice, being open minded enough to incorporate new techniques into their game, and regularly sparring, are all efforts required of a successful BJJ student. Relationships at times are certainly not easy, so putting in effort is a big factor.

Films, social media and popular novels tend to glamorize relationships. Achieving some fictional goal or standard of happiness is not easy, and actually requires patience, dedication and hard work. Although it made seem that the world of Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu is far removed from the realm of romance and the ideals of a solid relationship, the two are actually very close.   BJJ requires the same rudiments of maturity and discipline which are also the  foundation of a healthy relationship. So, if you’re wondering whether it’s a good decision to commit to a BJJ practitioner, then rest assured you’re in good hands.
