project” anymore, it’s an established European circuit with a clear pathway from open
qualifiers to a big-stage finale. The season is built around a run of Trials (hard, open-entry
tournaments) feeding into the Ocean Finale, already set for September 19, 2026 in
Cagliari.
The architecture is simple and ruthless: win a Trial, and you’re in. The Trials are open to
everyone, no belt, age, nationality, or background requirements, and Ocean explicitly
welcomes athletes from across grappling disciplines (judo, wrestling, sambo, MMA, and
beyond).
Each stop produces qualifiers across Ocean’s core divisions (lightweight and openweight for
both men and women), stacking the finale brackets with athletes who have earned their spot
the hard way, alongside invited special guests.
Ruleset built to reward intent
Where Ocean really separates itself is the ruleset philosophy: it’s engineered to reward
intent, not stall tactics. If there’s no finish, the match is decided by a priority order that puts
submission-related advantages first, then points, then penalties.
On top of that, Ocean adds cash incentives for what fans actually want to see, best submission,
best takedown, and most submissions, which naturally pushes the tempo and encourages
athletes to hunt.
That design is a big reason Ocean’s reputation has been growing fast. Even though this is
only Ocean’s third year as a pro grappling promotion, the organization has already expanded
significantly and established itself among the major European players.
The 2025 season underlined the level of the Trials too, producing a deep pool of finalists and
momentum for athletes who’ve since become key names in the circuit (including Paweł
Jaworski’s run to the Ocean title).
Forconi: “This year feels like the year of maturity”
Speaking on the launch of the new season, Fabrizio Forconi, Co-Owner and Event Manager
at Ocean BJJ, framed the opening Trial as a clear sign of the circuit’s evolution:
“The first Trial showed how mature Ocean has become: athletes from all over
Europe, unexpected upsets, and a great crowd. This year feels like the year of
maturity, for us as an organization and for the athletes who are realizing the
Ocean ruleset is truly one of a kind, putting the purest meaning of BJJ back at
the center: a relentless pursuit of the submission. This year’s stops, alongside Poland and Spain, also take us into countries with
a strong competitive tradition in the sport: England and France. We’re expecting
big things from the Trial winners, and I’m confident this year’s finals in Sardinia
will be the best we’ve ever had in terms of quality. And expect some major
names as special guests at the finals too!”
