Over 71% of Americans are obese or overweight. Naturally, many of us look to diet and exercise for the solutions. However, dieting is incredibly difficult and without proper planning, is sure to fail.

Therefore, in order to successful trim down and lose weight, you need to know how to create a diet plan.

This means more than just jumping on the dieting fad bandwagons, however. It means taking time to create a diet that’s right for you, your body, and your goals. Following along for quick and complete guide on how to create a diet plan!

Tips on How to Create a Diet Plan

Remember, everyone’s bodies are different. Just because your friend lost weight on a particular diet, it doesn’t mean you will too. To learn how to create a diet plan that will actually work, you need to think about your body and your lifestyle.

Regardless, you need to accept that adhering to a successful diet will require sacrifice, hard work, and discipline. As long as you’re on board with that, let’s get started!

  1. Assess Your Goals

First, start by writing down your goals. Start with your long-term, absolute goals. Then, break each big goal down into several small “milestone” goals. When climbing a mountain, it’s best to focus on the small accomplishments along the way, rather than staring at the peak.

Your goals must be written down or it’ll be easy to forget about them or cast them aside when you feel like being naughty.

  1. Think Long-Term

When learning how to create a diet plan that will work, you need to think about longevity. A get-skinny quick approach may work short term but will ultimately cause you more problems down the road.

You need to create a diet plan that is realistic. This will be one you can stick to for a long period of time so you can lose weight healthily. You should be aiming for no more than one to two pounds a week; anything else is unsustainable and too much fluctuation for your body.

  1. Do Your Research

Next, you need to do your research to learn how to create a diet plan specific to you.

What is your basal metabolic rate (the number of calories you burn at rest)? How many calories do you need to maintain? What’s a healthy caloric deficit to lose weight?

Have you looked into the benefits of intermittent fasting? What about carb cycling?

Take some time to look at all the pros and cons of different types of diets.

  1. Get Organized

Next, in learning how to create a diet plan that will last, you need to plan things out in an organized way.

You can look at a simple lesson plans checklist or template to help you write down and organize your goals. This includes your overall goals and milestone goals.

We also highly recommend having daily meal goals you can check off every day to stay motivated.

  1. Stay Committed

Finally, for any goal to be accomplished, you have to stay committed to it. This means, skipping dessert, using portion control, and saying no to after-work drinks.

If you want it bad enough, you will find a way, but don’t be afraid to ask for help! Get an accountability partner or diet with someone else!
