In a recent episode of The Casuals podcast, Nicky Rodriguez offered his thoughts on the first-ever Craig Jones Invitational (CJI) and its unexpected financial success. Held on the same weekend as the prestigious ADCC World Championships, CJI has quickly become a talking point within the Jiu-Jitsu community, known for its innovative approach and surprising profitability.
Rodriguez disclosed that over $3 million was invested in the event, which was a significant risk in the Jiu-Jitsu world. Despite initial doubts, the event not only recovered its investment but also turned a profit, an impressive feat considering it was organized in just three months.
“Wow, they spent a little over $3 million, and they made it all back and then some,” Nicky Rod remarked during the podcast, expressing his amazement at the financial outcome. “That’s impressive for an event put together in such a short time, especially happening on the same weekend as ADCC.”
Initially hesitant to participate in CJI due to doubts about the authenticity of the $1 million prize, Rodriguez ultimately decided to compete after confirming the prize was real. The significant financial opportunity made it an easy choice over ADCC.
“I was definitely torn, but once I realized the money was real, I thought, ‘With that kind of money, this becomes the most valuable tournament in Jiu-Jitsu,’” Nicky explained.
While Rodriguez’s account of the event’s profitability is exciting, Craig Jones later posted on Reddit to offer a more cautious perspective, mentioning that the final financial figures were still being calculated. Nonetheless, the event generated a lot of buzz, with B-Team’s YouTube content experiencing a significant surge in views, gaining an additional million views per day since the event.
