Mundials 2016 By The Numbers

Statistical analysis of the biggest tournament in BJJ calendar revealed some interesting trends. The Long Beach Walter Pyramid Tournament hosted some of the best athletes in the world of Jiu-Jitsu and largely reasserted the dominance of old champions.

BJJ Heroes did an interesting breakdown. As it turns out this year the Black Belt division was much larger then last year (200 as opposed to 145 the year before). Sadly there was a decrease in percentage of overall submissions and only 32% of matches ended in submissions.

The most frequent submission was Choke from the Back, followed by Armbar with Straight Ankle Lock coming in third.

The division that featured the biggest percentage of submissions was upto 88kg.

There was a reported rise in the use of Lapel guard, which was especially frequent in lower weight matches.

While 50/50 was also a prominent position half guard and closed guard were very efficient in terms of sweeps. Contemporary guard game was notably leaning toward Single Leg X which by far surpassed DLR and Spider guard.

Wins-Percentages-1

Double guard pulls were just a straw more frequent than takedowns (33 to 32). Many of the takedowns stem from unsuccessful guard pulls. The preferred takedown was single leg, often from collar drag.

Comparing guard pulling with weight classes developed a clear trend of “the heavier the player is, the less likely he  is to guard pull”.
