Miesha Tate Challenges Mackenzie Dern To A Submission Only Match

Tate is fresh off her victory against Jessica Eye in the Chael Sonnen Sub Only Event set in the Octagon. The newly retired UFC fighter is finding herself again and rediscovering the love for grappling.

I would love to compete against Mackenzie, I know that she’s credentialed as one of the best,” Tate said. “So, I’d like to test myself. Jessica is obviously I tough opponent, she’s a test in herself, but I’d really like to venture into the grappling world more.”

Tate started her career as a wrestler. Later moving on to Strikeforce and ultimately the UFC.

Tate is coming back to her grappling roots. And she’s loving everything about it:

“Jiu-Jitsu is my favorite part of the sport, my favorite aspect of mixed martial arts. So, to be able to take that part out, isolate it and have fun was great.”

Miesha Tate is reportedly a purple belt in bjj but it’s unclear how much of her training was gi oriented as such the rank is probably not entirely representational of her skills on the mat.

As for SUG2 it was quite nice in Tate’s mind:

“It was a transition. It was definitely something different. I kind of like that it was sort of a throwback, the venue was must smaller, the crowd was more intimate, it really reminded me of where I got my beginning. It just kind of refreshed me. Like man, this is just like where I started.”

Do you think the former UFC bantamweight champion would be able to match Mackenzie Dern in sub only event?
