Melqui Galvao Leaves Cyborg’s Fightsports Association

Melqui Galvao, the father and coach of BJJ phenom Mica Galvao, was the head instructor at Fight Sports in Manaus. It was a huge source of talent. It is from this academy that ADCC gold medalist Diogo “Baby Shark” Reis and Mica Galvao (Melqui Galvao’s son) come from.

The Brazilian made the decision to break away from Fight Sports and open his own academy in Jundiai, Sao Paulo, Brazil.
Melqui Galvao Jiu Jitsu will open in early 2023. Melqui Galvao has confirmed that his new academy will be built on the outskirts of Sao Paolo in Jundiai. Manaus is a huge city at the junction of the Amazon River and the Rio Negro. You can only get there by plane or boat, which made it very difficult for the contestants to perform in the USA. They had to fly via Sao Paolo or Rio de Janeiro.

Another reason Galvao is leaving Fight Sports is due to financial issues, but he has not provided details on this.

Former Fight Sports from Manaus was a true talent pool. It is from this academy that ADCC champion Diogo “Baby Shark” Reis comes from, as well as 18-year-old world black belt champion Mica Galvao. He is also the son of the coach and owner of the academy.

Moving to a bigger city is supposed to be an opportunity for the academy to develop financially. The next step is to open an academy in the United States, while the club in Manaus will open and continue to educate young athletes, who will eventually end up at the headquarters in Jundiai.

Mica Galvao is one of the fastest-rising stars of Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu. He’s already defeated a number of elite champions, such as Leandro Lo and Lucas “Hulk” Barbosa, despite being just 19 years old.
Of course, there have been many sacrifices on that road to success. In fact, it was Mica’s dad who pushed him in the beginning – even dropping him out of school when he was 13.

Mica broke out on the scene when in 2019 as a 15 year old blue belt, he was able to defeat  and submitted a black belt in spite of the experience and the age difference.

Micael Galvão made it by submitting Leandro Rounaud, a former IBJJF Manaus Open adult black belt champion, who looked out of his depth against the then outstanding 15-year-old talent. In 2022 he came 2nd at ADCC.

In his preparation for ADCC, he trained with BJJ and UFC legend Demian Maia who is an ADCC and BJJ world Champion and former UFC contender.

This was great to see as a clash of 2 generations. The 19 year old Galvao vs the 45 year old Maia.
