The ongoing case involving Brazilian jiu-jitsu coach Melqui Galvão continues to develop, with new details emerging from official sources and statements issued by his legal defense.
In a formal note sent by lawyer Átila Machado, Galvão’s defense firmly denied all accusations against him, emphasizing his cooperation with authorities and confidence in the judicial process.
“The defense reiterates that Melqui Galvão remains at the disposal of the competent authorities, trusts in the proper functioning of the institutions, and awaits the full clarification of the facts.”
According to the statement, Galvão, who has also worked as a civil police officer in the state of Amazonas, has maintained an active role in public service, training, and social projects, particularly in Manaus. In recent years, he had also expanded his jiu-jitsu operations into São Paulo, where he ran his own team and academy.
His legal team further described him as having an “unblemished professional record,” highlighting years of involvement in public security, personal defense instruction, and coaching, always “with dedication to public service and the fulfillment of the responsibilities inherent to his role.”
Despite the defense’s position, authorities have taken precautionary measures. The Civil Police of Amazonas has removed Galvão from his duties pending the outcome of the investigation. Additionally, an internal inquiry has been launched to examine the legality of his professional activities and whether there were any irregularities related to his work outside the state.
The institution also confirmed that a disciplinary administrative procedure has been opened to investigate the circumstances surrounding the case, stating that it does not tolerate misconduct and reaffirming its commitment to legality, ethics, and transparency.
The investigation gained further momentum following a court decision in São Paulo ordering Galvão’s temporary arrest. This decision came after a former student, aged 17, alleged that she had been a victim of abuse during an international trip connected to a sports competition.
According to the São Paulo Public Security Secretariat, at least two additional alleged victims have been identified. One of them stated in her testimony that she was abused at the age of 12. The case is currently being handled by a specialized unit, the 8th Women’s Defense Police Station.
Authorities have also reported that investigators collected testimonies from the families involved, including audio recordings and message exchanges. According to officials, these materials contain elements that may indicate potential criminal conduct, though the investigation remains ongoing.
At this stage, the case is still under active investigation, and no final judicial determination has been made. As developments continue to unfold, both the defense and authorities maintain their respective positions, with the legal process expected to clarify the full scope of the situation.
