Maldonaldo Wins Appeal but Russian MMA Refuses to Overturn Fedor Victory

Russia’s MMA Union, the one Fedor Emelianenko chaired. refuses to overturn victory over Maldonaldo in spite of the World MMA Association (WMMAA) overturning Fedor victory into a draw.

WMMA announced that Fedor Emelianenko’s victory is overturned after Fabio Maldonaldo turing in an appeal to the association.

Maldonaldo initially lost a majority decision to Fedor despite a great showing, especially in round 1 later appealed the decision to the Russian MMA Union. There were suggestions that a conflict of interest played a big part in the final result because Fedor is the president of the Russian MMA Union and the officials were assigned by that same union to referee the fight. The union denied the appeal because Maldonaldo didn’t file within 40 minutes of the announcement even though he was never informed about this rule.

The appeal itself was denied by president Radmir Gabdulin, a former M-1 Global fighter with an established working relationship with Emelianenko according to bloody elbow.

Maldonaldo later took his appeal to the WMMAA but in spite of Russia being one of the member nations of WMMAA the Russians refuse to overturn the score in spite of 3 indipendent officials each scoring it 28-28. The selected officials were Youri Lamoureux (CAN), Lukasz Bosacki (POL), Alexey Zemskov (RUS). Gabdullin said in a statement to Tass.ru that the “result cannot be overturned.”

“The WMMAA can express their views, but do not have the right to influence the judge’s decision on the Russian professional promotion. This situation I regard as an unfounded attempt to take away a well-deserved victory from Russian legend Fedor Emelianenko.”
