The Legendary Sergio Penha’s High Pressure Side Control That Submits People & Surprise Americana

Bernardo Faria recently visited the legendary red and white belt Sergio Penha at his academy in Las Vegas. Penha is most known for his epic competition match in the 1980s where he almost defeated Rickson Gracie. Penha was also an airline pilot for many years!

Bernardo asked Penha to show him his most famous position, the side control Kuzure Kesa Gatame.

Kuzure-Kesa-Gatame aka modified scarf hold is one of the seven mat holds, Osaekomi-waza, of Kodokan Judo. In grappling terms, it is categorized as a side control hold.

Here Penha shows his method of applying huge amounts of pressure. Notice how he lifts his hips and rests them on Bernardo’s ribs. At no ppint is Bernardo comfortable…

Penha also shows a very interesting Americana lock set up from there that not many have seen…
