Demi-Leigh Nel-Peters is a South African model – she was crowned Miss Universe 2017.
She told page six:
“I was held up at gunpoint a month after I won Miss South Africa,” says the New York transplant.
“It was on June 7 of last year . . . I was in South Africa on my way to an event, and I was carjacked by five guys.”
She added: “It was scary — but the magic of that was I did a women’s empowerment course about three months prior to the incident, where they taught me what to do if you go through a situation like that. I was driving and I stopped at a red traffic light in broad daylight . . . When I saw the weapons, I immediately surrendered and gave up the car. But when I got out of the car, the guy actually tried to push me back in . . . I said to myself, ‘I’d rather be shot here than kidnapped and never be seen again.’
“The second destination will never be better than the first. So I punched him in his throat and ran away.”
She’s now working with the UFC to help empower women:
“It was extremely traumatic, and that is exactly how ‘Unbreakable’ was born,” Nel-Peters told MMAjunkie. “I knew how the skills and knowledge that I was taught prior to that incident saved my life and helped me to get away from an unwanted situation.
“It helped me to stay safe and to get out of that situation, and that is why I am so passionate about empowering women and people with skills and knowledge on how to prevent violent situations from happening.”
5x World BJJ champion Bernardo Faria has developed the No Gi Half Guard. His submissions and sweeps works just as easily for No Gi, if not easier.
1.In No Gi there are not as many grips you can play. For example, you can’t play spider guard and the whole array of guards that stem from it. His guard works perfectly.
2.There are not a lot of grips your opponent can use to stop your sweep while playing No Gi. They can’t grab your collar, sleeve or pants obviously. Again, his guard works perfectly.
