A martial artist with a background in karate decided to put himself through one of the most honest tests possible in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu: facing opponents from every belt level — from black belt all the way down to white.
Sensei Seth, who has technically remained a BJJ white belt since 2016, stepped onto the mats with a simple goal — to see where he truly stands. But there was a twist.
Every opponent he faced was significantly lighter — between 36 to 45 kilograms (80–100 lbs) less than him — making size a deliberate factor in the experiment.
The Black Belt Reality Check
The challenge started at the highest level: black belt. Seth’s opponent was world champion Javier Gomez from JG Academy — and the gap was immediately obvious.
“Once we touched the ground, Javier was on me like white on rice on a paper plate in the middle of a snowstorm,” Seth recalled.
Despite having a massive weight advantage, Seth described the experience as suffocating and one-sided:
“Not once did it feel like I had an opening to do something.”
Reflecting on the difference, he summed up black belt level simply:
“They counter everything you attempt, and they do not make mistakes — at least not against someone at my level.”
Purple Belts: Precision Over Chaos
As he moved down to purple belts, things changed — but not as much as he might have hoped.
The domination wasn’t as overwhelming, but the precision remained sharp.
“With the purple belts, it didn’t feel like as much was happening, but when they wanted to put me in a position I couldn’t do much, they were able to do it.”
Seth was submitted in each round at this level and only experienced brief moments of opportunity — never anything close to finishing.
Blue Belts: Closer, But Still Outmatched
Against blue belts, the gap narrowed slightly. Seth was able to create offense and even came close to securing a submission once, setting up what looked like a solid armbar.
Still, the outcome remained the same — he was submitted multiple times and failed to finish any opponent.
The lesson? Even at intermediate levels, technique continues to outweigh raw size.
White Belts: Not As Easy As Expected
Finally, Seth faced white belts — but even here, things didn’t go as planned.
Both opponents had prior grappling experience in judo and no-gi, and despite the huge size difference, neither went down easily.
“It’s like nothing works because he’s very heavy,” one of them said. “So you need really good technique. And timing.”
Seth, however, still couldn’t secure a single submission.
Final submission count across all rounds: zero.
Does Size Matter in BJJ?
One of the most interesting takeaways from the experiment was how size actually played out.
Seth was clear:
“Oh, 100%. But I think it’s more of an advantage than it is an equalizer.”
Standing, the extra weight helped. But on the ground — especially when stuck on bottom — it meant very little.
“When everyone else was on top, it felt like there was no size advantage. But as soon as I could get on top, happy day, I am 100 lbs heavier than you are.”
The Honest Conclusion
At the end of the experiment, Seth didn’t try to justify or inflate his level. Instead, he gave a brutally honest self-assessment:
“I make plenty of mistakes. I don’t know what to do in certain positions. I think it’s probably best I stay where I am.”
What This Really Shows
This experiment highlights something every grappler eventually learns:
- Technique dominates size — especially at higher levels
- Each belt represents a real, measurable jump in skill
- Experience in grappling matters more than rank alone
And maybe most importantly — honesty about your level is one of the fastest ways to improve.
Because in Jiu-Jitsu, the mats don’t lie.
