Earlier in March Garry Tonon put on quite a show and knocked out his ONE FC opponent Corminal.

In the bout Tonon didn’t really try too hard to take things to ground and you could even see him consciously avoiding just going for the sub.

Recently his coach John Danaher was asked by flograppling if he was disappointed by the lack of submission. Here’s how he answered:

“On the contrary, the opposite. I think if he’d gotten a submission it would’ve been an easy route it would’ve been a route which didn’t really prove anything. People would’ve just expected that. I think there was a sense in which he was right to say let me show what I can do, let me develop as an athlete. “

Danaher added:

“Would I always encourage him to do that? Of course not. I think it’s always a mistake for athletes to get away from their strongest points but in Garry’s case this is also about development time. He’s got 2 years to develop as an athlete and then once he’s got to a point where he goes I’ve achieved some satisfactory level of development now I can start to employ my particular game. “
