John Danaher recently shared his perspective on coaching – offering a definition of what separates effective coaches from ineffective ones.
Here is what he had to say on the topic:
For me, it’s always going to come down to one thing.
Are you making measurable differences in the performance of your students towards their goals? And if the answer to that is no or I’m not sure, then you’re wasting their time and money.
He emphasized that coaching should always be tied to tangible progress, with students arriving at the gym with specific goals that must be actively developed:
Your students come to you with a set of goals…
And I should be able to demonstrate an ability to facilitate their passage towards those goals.
Danaher also highlighted the importance of building the right environment to consistently produce success:
For me, the single most important thing is the building of a general culture which facilitates that passage to victory.
For example, he noted that small regions can dominate entire sports when the right systems and expectations are in place:
That small corner of the globe (the Caucasus region) has disproportionately dominated the sport of freestyle wrestling in the Olympic Games for the last 25 years.
