Jocko Willink Recalls The First Time He Got Tapped Out: “In Less Than A Minute”

How was the first encounter with Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu for you? It was, probably, a mix of sudden humbleness and excitement at once… Because you couldn’t believe that you could get tapped out so effortlessly – and you wanted to learn how to do it as well.

It was the same thing for Jocko Willink. He recalled the first time he got introduced to Jiu-Jitsu:

When I first trained, I just graduated from NAVY Seal training. And I thought I was the man, and I was 19 years old…

And so, this old master chief – like, the oldest guy I’ve ever seen – he was probably, like, 40 (laughs).
He goes: “Who wants to learn how to fight?” And I say: “Me.”

Jocko was certain of his success… After all, he just graduated from one of the toughest military training in the world.
But the reality showed him that BJJ is the “real deal”:

So he brings us out, lines us up on the mat, there’s like 5 of us new guys. And he tapped us all out in less than a minute each.

And that’s what it is. That’s what Jiu-Jitsu is. That’s why people talk about it a lot.
Because, when it first happens to you – you can’t even believe it.
