Jocko Willink on How Long Does It Take To Get A Blue Belt?

Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu has a belt graduation system that is usually harder to get through then any other martial art. In other systems, you can get your black belt in only 2-3 years, but for BJJ on average, it takes 8 – 10 years, and sometimes even longer.

BJJ is a complex martial art, which requires a combination of knowledge, time and applied efficiency against a resisting opponent. The sad reality is that the majority of people who start BJJ drop out. Over 90% of people will quit BJJ before they even get to blue belt, and once or if they do reach blue belt, over 90% of them will never make it to black belt. The drop out rate is high.

For a beginner, the BJJ blue belt is a big deal in the martial art/sport as it’s the first coloured belt in the long journey that makes up Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu. For long term practitioners, the blue belt is really just a stepping stone in the grand scheme of things.

With this in mind, Carlson Gracie Black belt Prof. Olavo Abreu is heading a program that sees students sign up to a 3 month intensive training camp in his academy Phuket Top Team in Thailand, with if they complete the course, they are assessed an promoted to blue belt in BJJ under Prof. Olavo Abreu and the Carlson Gracie Jnr lineage. With an official IBJJF blue belt certificate:
