Jocko Explains Why You Need To Be Working Out – Regardless Of Your BJJ Training

Jocko Willink held an Origin Jiu-Jitsu camp a couple of days ago; where, together with the other participants, he trained Jiu-Jitsu all day. However, despite rolling all that time (yeah, you can only guess how tiring that was), in true Jocko fashion… He still managed to get to working out.

“Discipline” is just one of the reasons why Jocko never misses the gym. Arguably the biggest reason is his understanding that working out is immensely important for mobility… Which is what many BJJ students forget about:

I think that’s actually a really important thing [getting a workout in].

Sometimes people jump so deep into Jiu-Jitsu and they stop working out. And I don’t think that’s good from an injury-prevention standpoint.
I’ve been pretty lucky as far as injuries and Jiu-Jitsu go… I believe that at least some of it is from always, always working out. Never getting to a point where I’m leaving the physical fitness behind.

And this isn’t because I don’t love Jiu-Jitsu, because I do. But I get in there and get moving.

As a matter of fact, it was during that exact Origin Jiu-Jitsu camp that Jocko promoted his own daughter to blue belt!
