Gabi Pessanha’s Dominance
Gabi Pessanha continued to assert her dominance in the world of Jiu-Jitsu, winning both the weight and absolute categories. She first faced Yara Soares in the super-heavyweight division, securing victory with a footlock in under three minutes. In their rematch for the absolute title, Pessanha needed only 24 seconds to submit Soares with another footlock, earning her eighth career world title.
Mica Galvão’s Grand Slam Achievement
Mica Galvão, one of the sport’s rising stars, captured his first world title in the lightweight division by narrowly defeating Andy Murasaki. In a tightly contested match, Galvão won 2-0 on advantages, completing the prestigious “Grand Slam” by winning the World, European, Pan, and Brazilian titles at just 20 years old.
Men’s Category Highlights
Erich Munis claimed the absolute title without competing in the final due to Jansen Gomes’ injury. Munis, who had previously won three titles in the super-heavyweight division, fell to his brother Anderson Munis in the super-heavyweight final, where Anderson secured victory with a leg lock.
Diego Pato added another feather to his cap by winning his third world title in the featherweight division, submitting Jonas Andrade with a choke. Meyram Maquine also emerged victorious in the featherweight category, defeating Ademir Barreto with a choke for his second world title.
Yatan Bueno triumphed in the heavyweight division, defeating Pedro Alex 5-0 on points. Poland’s Adam Wardzinsky became the only European black belt champion of 2024, winning the light heavyweight division by submitting Vinicius Liberati with a katagatame. Jackson Nagai won the middleweight title with an armbar against Francisco Lo, and Bebeto Oliveira secured the bantamweight title by choking Zayed Alkatheeri.
Women’s Category Highlights
Mayssa Bastos won her fifth world title in the bantamweight division with a dominant 10-0 victory over Jhefiner Aquino. Andressa Cintra continued her winning streak, submitting Larissa Martins with a choke in the middleweight division for her fifth world championship.
Luiza Monteiro secured her third world title in the lightweight division, submitting Canadian Brianna Ste-Marie with a footlock in the final seconds of their match. Tamiris Silva and Thamara Ferreira each claimed their first world titles, winning the heavyweight and light heavyweight divisions, respectively. Nathalie Ribeiro and Thamires Aquino also won their first world championships as black belts, with both securing victories by referee decision.
