Improve Your Toreando Pass by Using These Key Principles

The Toreando Pass is often the very first guard pass you’ll learn in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu. And no wonder: its mechanics aren’t too complicated, and they teach you some important movement that’ll come in handy with other passes as well.
However, just as it is the case with any other BJJ technique, there is much more than meets the eye.

 

IMPROVE YOUR TOREANDO PASS

Jon Thomas, a black belt under Master Romero Cavalcanti (Jacaré) and Lucas Lepri, explains that there are many things that you should keep in mind when passing the guard. However, when it comes to the Toreando Pass, you should beware that it isn’t as simple as just “gripping the opponent’s legs and throwing them away”.
Rather, you should take into account the grips your opponent makes. Beware of them; for they could break havoc on your chances of success.

Also, you shouldn’t be trying to pass from too far out. If you’re too far from your opponent, they’ll have enough time to frame and retain their guard even if the pass itself was good.
Thomas shares a bonus tip here; when approaching your opponent, your torso should form an angle as if you were looking over a well… In a careful, yet engaging fashion.
